Nepal, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal (Nepali: सङ्घीय लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्र नेपाल Sanghiya Loktāntrik Ganatantra Nepāl), is a landlocked country in South Asia with a population of 26.4 million. It is a multiethnic nation with Nepali as the official language. Kathmandu is the nation's capital and largest city. Modern Nepal is a secular parliamentary republic.Nepal is bordered by China to the north and India to the south, east, and west. It borders neither Bangladesh nor Bhutan, due to a narrow Indian corridor and the Indian state of Sikkim respectively. Nepal is located in the Himalayas and is home to eight of the world's ten tallest mountains, including Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. Its southern Terai region is fertile and humid.The country has an area of 147,181 square kilometres (56,827 sq mi), making it the world's 93rd largest country by area.
Nepal is amazingly rich and varied in its biodiversity due to the altitudinal variances, which makes Nepal a country of lush moist forest and sparse alpine desert to luxurious grasslands. The mountainous region also shelters some of the world’s most rare species of fauna. Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park and Chitwan National Park with their typical natural, cultural and landscape characteristics were listed as World Heritage sites in 1979 and 1984, respectively.
Established in 1973, Chitwan National park is the first protected area of Nepal. And the protected areas now includes ten national parks, three wildlife reserves, one hunting reserve and six conservation areas and eleven buffer zones covering an area of 34,186.62 sq. km that is 23.23% of the total area of the country.
